WHAT IS DHI HAIR TRANSPLANTATION?
DHI hair transplant is the abbreviation of “Direct Hair Implantation”. DHI is a hair transplantation procedure also known as the pen technique. Similar to all of the hair transplantation technique, grafts are collected from the donor area, thus from the nape and/or rarely from the bread or chest with the medical pencil called Choi and then the hair obtained with this pen is placed directly on the skin without opening channel.
There are certain points that distinguish DHI hair transplantation technique from other hair transplantation techniques. The most important point that distinguishes this technique from other techniques is the fact that DHI implants the extracted grafts directly by placing the needle and creating an opening simultaneously with special implanters, thus hair follicles are extracted and then transplanted directly into the recipient areas. The FUE procedure was made possible and called DHI hair transplantation. However, while standard FUE procedure involves three steps including collection of hair follicles, the opening of the channels and planting the grafts to the opened channels, DHI hair transplantation involves two steps including collection of hair follicles and planting the grafts to the opened channels.
HOW IS DHI HAIR TRANSPLANTATION METHOD APPLIED?
DHI transplantation takes about 10-12 hours and performed under a local anesthesia or sedation and does not require a hospital stay. Grafts in the donor area collected one by one with the help of a special device. Immediately after that, collected healthy follicles are placed directly in the recipient area with a special tip pen called Choi. Follicles collected are not kept in solution as in other FUE methods. Therefore, it is aimed to keep the survival time of the grafts long by not keeping them outside too long. Because, it is believed that the hair loss decreases in this way, after hair transplantation. However, there is no scientific evidence that the DHI method is more successful or less advantageous than the FUE method.
The diameter of the cylindrical tip choi pens used in the operation ranges from 0.65 to 1 mm. An average of 2 to 6 choi pens are used during the procedure and about 10 to 15 choi tips are used in these pens. A healthy hair follicle is collected from the donor area inside the choi tip. After the collection process, the specialist doctor is required to complete the transplantation very precisely at angles of about 45 degrees and using the pen’s push mechanism according to the natural direction of hair growth.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF DHI HAIR TRANSPLANTATION METHOD?
- When the operation is performed under the DHI hair transplantation method, one of the most remarkable advantages is that the area where hair transplantation is planned does not need to be shaved. Moreover, after the grafts are obtained from the donor area, they are directly inserted to the recipient area without opening micro channels separately. In addition, the length of time the grafts remain outside is minimized. Hair loss is reduced both during and after hair transplantation method. It is possible to perform denser hair transplantation, especially in the hair transplantation applied in narrow areas. For this reason, it is one of the most preferred methods for hair transplantation in women.
- DHI is applied with a much more advanced technology in hair transplantation. Hair transplantation is performed more densely and faster thanks to the thin-tipped characteristics of the Choi pen. In addition, angle and direction are easier to determine with the implanters used in DHI transplantation. Thus, it is much easier to give the hair a more natural look.
- Since there is no need to open channels in the area where hair transplantation will be performed, the existing hair follicles are not damaged in any way during the transplant. The absence of holes, incisions and stitches in the area where the procedure will be performed not only minimizes the risk of bleeding, but also makes the healing process much shorter.
- New hair follicles transplanted by DHI method grow faster. Since the hair follicles are implanted without waiting for a while, it is possible for cell division to continue.
- Since the trauma related to the procedure is minimal in the donor area where the hair removal procedure is performed, recovery occurs faster.
- DHI hair transplantation is performed under local anesthesia or sedation to eliminate the sense of pain. The patient can return to daily life after operation.
